Do You Need a GP Referral to See a Physiotherapist in Queensland?

Do You Need a GP Referral to See a Physiotherapist in Queensland?

No. You can book a physiotherapist directly, with no referral, and be seen the same week. Physiotherapists are primary contact practitioners in Australia. A referral is only required when someone other than you is paying for the treatment, which means Medicare, WorkCover Queensland, DVA or a CTP insurer.

Plenty of people wait weeks for a GP appointment before booking physiotherapy, then find out at the desk that they never needed one. Here is what each funding pathway actually requires, so you can work out in a minute whether you need paperwork or just an appointment time.

Why physiotherapists do not need a referral

Physiotherapy is a first contact profession. Physiotherapists complete a university qualification in assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions, register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and are required to screen for conditions that need medical rather than physical treatment.

That screening is part of every first appointment. If something in your history or examination suggests the problem is not musculoskeletal, or that it needs imaging or a medical opinion, your physiotherapist writes to your GP and tells you on the day.

Where a referral does matter

Medicare

Medicare only funds allied health for people with a chronic condition, through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan. This is the plan that replaced GP Management Plans and Team Care Arrangements from 1 July 2025. It allows up to five allied health services per calendar year, shared across every allied health provider you see.

The plan has to exist before your appointment. Medicare will not backdate it, so an appointment attended while you were waiting on the paperwork cannot be claimed later.

WorkCover Queensland

Work injuries need a claim number, a current work capacity certificate from your treating doctor and your case manager’s contact details. Once the claim is accepted and treatment approved, WorkCover Queensland is billed directly and you pay nothing. Fortius Allied Health treats WorkCover patients at all four clinics and reports back to your case manager as part of the return to work plan.

DVA

Gold and White Card holders need a current D904 referral from a GP. It covers a defined period and then needs renewing, and reception will flag it before it lapses.

CTP after a motor vehicle accident

Treatment after a car accident is usually funded by the at fault driver’s CTP insurer. You need a claim number and confirmation from the insurer that allied health treatment is approved. Lodging the claim early matters, because approval takes time and the recovery generally goes better if rehabilitation starts sooner. You can be seen before the approval letter arrives, but you will be asked to pay for those appointments and claim the cost back from the insurer afterwards.

What happens at a first appointment

The first visit is an assessment. Your physiotherapist will take a history, ask about your general health and medications, watch how you move, test the relevant joints and muscles, and screen for anything that needs a medical opinion.

You should leave with three things: an explanation of what is going on in plain language, a plan with a rough number of sessions attached, and something to do between now and the next visit. Treatment usually starts in that same appointment.

Wear or bring clothing you can move in. Bring any scans or specialist letters, even old ones, and a list of your medications.

Booking in Noosaville and across the Sunshine Coast

Fortius Allied Health has four Queensland clinics: Noosaville, Caloundra, Birtinya and Gympie.

The Noosaville clinic at Noosa Civic Medihub, Level 1, 26 Eenie Creek Road currently has the widest appointment availability, with appointments from 7am through to 5:30pm. Phone 07 5440 7700 for Noosaville and Gympie, 07 5293 6000 for Caloundra, or 07 5413 5202 for Birtinya. Reception takes calls from 7:30am to 5:30pm and can tell you what, if anything, you need to bring.

You can also book online. If you are unsure which service fits, the physiotherapy and exercise physiology pages explain the difference, and reception can point you to the right one.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Australia?

No. Physiotherapists are primary contact practitioners, so you can book a private appointment directly without seeing a GP first. A referral is only needed when someone other than you is paying, which means Medicare, WorkCover Queensland, DVA or a CTP insurer.

Do I need a referral to claim physiotherapy on private health insurance?

No. Private health funds do not require a GP referral for physiotherapy extras cover. You book directly, and the rebate is processed at the clinic through HICAPS on the day of your appointment.

What referral do I need for physiotherapy under Medicare?

You need a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, which your GP writes if you have an eligible chronic condition. It allows up to five allied health services per calendar year across all providers. The plan must be in place before your appointment, because Medicare does not pay retrospectively.

Can a physiotherapist refer me for an X-ray or an MRI?

Physiotherapists can refer for some imaging, though whether a Medicare rebate applies depends on the scan and the referrer. In practice most imaging for musculoskeletal problems is arranged through your GP. Your physiotherapist will tell you if a scan is likely to change your treatment, and will write to your GP if one is needed.

How soon can I get a physiotherapy appointment on the Sunshine Coast?

Availability varies by clinic. The Fortius Allied Health clinic at Noosa Civic Medihub currently has the widest availability of the four clinics, including early morning and late afternoon appointments between 7am and 5:30pm. Phone 07 5440 7700 to check the next available time.

Should I see my GP first anyway?

For most musculoskeletal problems you do not have to. See a GP first if you have fever, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, severe pain after significant trauma, or new numbness or weakness, or if you want to be assessed for a Medicare chronic condition plan. Physiotherapists screen for these at the first appointment and refer on when needed.
