What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact, full-body exercise method that targets core strength while improving flexibility, balance, and muscular endurance. It incorporates breath control and mindful movement to enhance body awareness, promote better posture, and support more efficient movement patterns.
Reformer Pilates
Reformer Pilates is a specialised form of Pilates performed on a machine called a Reformer. This equipment features a sliding carriage and adjustable springs to provide varying levels of resistance. It allows for highly controlled, low-impact movements that challenge strength, coordination, and stability.
In a clinical setting, Reformer Pilates is often used for precise movement retraining, joint support, and gradual rehabilitation. Its adaptability makes it ideal for a wide range of needs—from post-operative recovery to chronic pain management.
Can anyone do pilates?
Yes! Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Before starting, you require an initial assessment with one of our Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists. This allows us to assess your mobility, strength, and any existing injuries, so we can create a safe and tailored exercise and management plan.
Clinical vs Non-Clinical Pilates
At Fortius Allied Health, we offer Clinical Reformer Pilates—a targeted, therapeutic approach designed to support injury recovery and prevent future issues. Guided by qualified healthcare professionals, these sessions are based on detailed clinical assessments and incorporate knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and biomechanics.
With a maximum of four participants per class, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists are able to provide personalised guidance and one-on-one feedback throughout your session. The other benefit of Clincal Reformer Pilates is that you are able to use your private health cover.
What do I wear?
For your Reformer Pilates class, we recommend wearing comfortable, form-fitting activewear that allows for full range of movement—think leggings or fitted shorts and a breathable top. Avoid loose clothing, as it can get caught in the equipment. Grip socks are required for hygiene and safety, helping you stay stable on the reformer. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle and a small towel!
